Matt Cutts, the head of webspam at Google and an esteemed engineer ,announced a few days a new algorithm update ,created to impact exact match domain sites, that offer low quality content and duplicate content .
EMD (Exact Match Domains) is the newest algorithm Google implemented in order to make sure that low -quality websites won't rise high in their search results. Many people or businesses had websites that use keywords in the domain's to help their websites rank high in Google's search results and not only. For example,if you want to sell shoes for ladies, you will acquire shoesforladies.com or other extension in order to rank ghigh for the keyword phrase "Shoes For Ladies " .
Matt Cutts, the head of webspam at Google, was the one who announced the new alghoritm on Twitter on September 28 :
"Minor weather report: small upcoming Google algo change will reduce low-quality “exact-match” domains in search results.”
Matt Cutts also added that the new alghoritm will affect 0.6% of English-US queries to a noticeable degree. Moreover he added that Google EMD Update is unrelated to their other recent algorithms - Panda (the algorithm that fights against low quality content) and Penguin (the algorithm that fights against web spam) .
This should come as no surprise,as Matt Cutts made the following comment about exact match domains in 2011 :
"We have looked at the rankings and weights that we give to keyword domains and some people have complained that we’re giving a little too much weight for keywords in domains. And so we have been thinking about adjusting that mix a little bit and sort of turning the knob down within the algorithm so that given two different domains, it wouldn’t necessarily help you as much to have a domain with a bunch of keywords in it."
Even though Google assured everybody that those websites that have EMDs and have quality content will still rank high in Google's search results,we all know that whenever a new algorithm is pushed out, there is also reason for concern. Many webmasters have already seen changes in their EMD website traffic and feel that their websites have been unfairly target. However,if you have experienced a drop in traffic ,you should wait for a couple of weeks for the final results, because these new alghoritms do have a tendency to fluctuate.
Google announced many new algorithms lately and even the best SEO experts are still struggling to find out what exactly changed and what a website should have to rank well in Google's search results.
Another important thing is that Google's EMD Update will be a periodic update. It won't be looking constantly for bad EMD domain names .
What to do when you have experienced a drop in traffic and your website was targeted by Google's EMD update ?
You have to remove all the poor quality content .After you have removed all the poor quality content, you will have to wait untill the EMD filter runs again.
